President Donald Trump’s main priorities in dealing with China focused on trade and North Korea. He criticized China’s trade practices but did not label China a currency manipulator, noting in April 2017 that China had stopped manipulating its currency and was assisting the U.S. in enforcing sanctions against North Korea.

On July 10, 2018, the U.S. Trade Representative called for a 10 percent tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods to encourage changes in China’s trade practices. Earlier, on June 15, 2018, the Trump administration announced a 25 percent tariff on $50 billion worth of Chinese goods, prompting retaliatory tariffs from China. Trump indicated he initially refrained from tougher measures due to China’s cooperation on North Korea sanctions.
