Trump Administration’s Approach to North Korea
The Trump administration addressed North Korea’s nuclear program with economic sanctions and threats of force against any aggression toward the U.S. or its allies. This approach culminated in a historic meeting between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12, 2018, in Singapore.
At the summit, they signed a document committing to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and establishing a stable peace regime. They also pledged to improve U.S.-North Korea relations and recover remains of prisoners of war and missing persons. In return, Trump offered security guarantees to North Korea.
During a press conference post-summit, Trump acknowledged the challenge of denuclearization, emphasizing the long process ahead while expressing optimism about achieving peace and prosperity for both nations.
