U.S. Withdrawal from the Iran Nuclear Deal
On January 16, 2016, the United States and five world powers implemented the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with the Islamic Republic of Iran, imposing limits on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
However, on May 8, 2018, President Donald Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. He cited concerns that the agreement did not adequately address issues such as Iran’s military sites, missile program, sunset provisions, and support for terrorism. Trump’s decision included not renewing sanctions waivers and imposing new sanctions on Iran, effectively ending U.S. participation in the accord.
